The very first email was sent in 1901 from Imperial College London to a small shack in the Shetlands. Owing to limited technology at the time, it involved a journey of several days for a small but determined butler carrying a roll of paper tape onto which the message had been encoded. Fortunately, today's mail servers are slightly quicker.
